Kathleen R. Simpson Receives the NCC President's Award

Jan 3, 2014

On December 9, 2013Kathleen R. Simpson, RNC-OB, PhD, FAAN was honored as the recipient of the NCC President's Award. The NCC President's Award is given in recognition for outstanding service to NCC and advocacy of certification. This award has an illustrious history. Previous award recipients have been Mimi Bennett for her work on the Consensus Model and as NCC President, Susan Blackburn who has been Chair of the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing Care Content Team since its inception, Rosanne Harrigan for her work in getting NCC to establish its own test development platform and her leadership as NCC President; and Betty Burns, NCC's Executive Director.

Kathleen has been a member of the Inpatient Obstetric Nursing and Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Content Teams, as well as a past NCC Board member. She has made her expertise in EFM freely available to NCC and has helped with many projects including the development of the EFM Monograph and the EFM online video game. But most notable  is her efforts to promote certification to institutions. With the implementation of the Institutional Certification Program - Kathleen, as a recognized patient safety expert and advocate, has promoted certification to institutions as a vehicle for patient safety. Since she has been actively promoting the program, the number of those pursuing a NCC certification has reached 10,000 a year. And the number of health care professionals taking the EFM exam accounts for almost one-third of all NCC exams given. Kathleen's efforts are a driving force for certification.

Congratulations Kathleen, and thank you for your service to NCC , advocacy for patient safety and promotion of certification.
